Proverbs 8:1-4

Context

Proverbs 8 continues the extended discourse on wisdom that has been a central theme throughout the book. In the preceding chapters, Solomon has contrasted the path of wisdom with the way of folly, warning against the seductive dangers of the adulteress and foolishness while extolling the benefits and value of pursuing wisdom. Chapter 7 concluded with a vivid warning about the young man who falls prey to the immoral woman, illustrating the deadly consequences of rejecting wisdom's instruction. Now, in stark contrast to the deceptive calls of folly and immorality, wisdom herself is personified as a woman who publicly proclaims her message. Rather than lurking in shadows or whispering in secret places, wisdom stands openly in the most prominent and accessible locations where people gather. Wisdom is addressing all of humanity, particularly the simple and foolish who need her instruction.

[1] Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? [2] She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. [3] She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: [4] “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.

The Lord is speaking to the priests of Israel, contrasting their corrupt behavior with the faithful example of their ancestor Levi. God had previously rebuked these priests for despising His name and offering defiled sacrifices on the altar, showing contempt for their sacred duties. The priests had been complaining that serving God was burdensome and had been accepting blemished animals for sacrifice, violating the covenant requirements. Through the prophet Malachi, God reminds them of the original covenant He made with the tribe of Levi, which was meant to bring life and peace in exchange for reverence and faithful service. The Lord is addressing the priests of Israel.

[5] “Mycovenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave them to him that he might fear Me; So he feared Me And was reverent before My name. [6] The law of truth was in his mouth, And injustice was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from iniquity. [7] “Forthe lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.

Context

Peter has just instructed his readers on how to respond to suffering for righteousness' sake, emphasizing that Christ also suffered and died for sins, bringing believers to God. He has urged them to arm themselves with Christ's attitude toward suffering and to live according to God's will rather than human desires. Peter reminds them that they will give account to God, who judges the living and the dead, and encourages them to be serious and watchful in prayer while maintaining fervent love for one another. He emphasizes using their spiritual gifts to serve others and glorifying God in all things. Peter then addresses suffering as Christians, instructing them not to be ashamed but to glorify God in that name, explaining that judgment begins with God's household and warning of the fate awaiting those who disobey the gospel.

[1] The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: [2] Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; [3] nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; [4] and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. [5] Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” [6] Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, [7] casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Context

Jesus has been preparing His disciples for His imminent departure, warning them about coming persecution and explaining that the Holy Spirit will guide them after He leaves. He has told them they will weep and mourn while the world rejoices, but their sorrow will turn to joy, comparing it to a woman giving birth. Jesus has assured them that though they will be scattered and leave Him alone, the Father remains with Him, and He has spoken these things so they may find peace amid tribulation in the world. Jesus is addressing His disciples in the upper room during the Last Supper.

[33] These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” [1] Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, [2] as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. [3] And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. [4] I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. [5] And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. [6] “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. [7] Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. [8] For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.
