Context

Jesus has just finished feeding over five thousand people with five loaves and two fish near the Sea of Galilee. After this miraculous feeding, the crowds are still present and the disciples have collected twelve baskets of leftover fragments. Jesus immediately compels his disciples to enter a boat and cross to the other side of the sea while he dismisses the multitude. Once the crowds depart, Jesus goes up onto a mountain alone to pray, and evening arrives with the disciples' boat now far from land, being tossed by waves due to contrary winds.

[22] Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. [23] And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. [24] But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. [25] Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. [26] And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. [27] But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” [28] And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” [29] So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. [30] But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” [31] And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” [32] And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. [33] Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” [34] When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. [35] And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, [36] and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans 11:25-36

Context

Paul has been addressing the relationship between Israel and the Gentiles in God's redemptive plan. He explained that Israel's stumbling has brought salvation to the Gentiles, which in turn is meant to provoke Israel to jealousy. Using the metaphor of an olive tree, he warned Gentile believers against arrogance, reminding them that they were grafted into Israel's root and stand only by faith. He emphasized that God has not rejected His people and that the natural branches can be grafted back in if they do not persist in unbelief. Paul has been building toward a climactic revelation about God's mysterious purposes for both Jews and Gentiles in salvation history. Paul is addressing the Roman church, which includes both Jewish and Gentile believers.

[25] For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. [26] And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; [27] For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” [28] Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. [29] For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. [30] For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, [31] even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. [32] For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all. [33] Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! [34] “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” [35] “Orwho has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” [36] For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
