Fast of the Transfiguration · Day 3 of 5

Follow Me

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You took Saints Peter, James, and John with You up the mountain. Take us with You now. We come with questions, plans, and worries, but You ask first for our trust. Teach us to walk with You when the way is not fully explained, and make our obedience simple, attentive, and free from fear. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 17:1“Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves.”

Reflection

The Gospel gives almost no detail about how Peter, James, and John went with Jesus up the mountain — only that he took them with him, and they went. The devotional contrasts this with how we normally prepare for a journey: researching the destination, planning the route, provisioning against every possible failure. Matthew gives us no itinerary or explanation, only their willingness to go with Christ. Their journey becomes a picture of what it means to trust God without first demanding a map, trading the illusion of control for simple, immediate obedience to Christ’s call.

Group Discussion Questions

Gather with your group and discuss:

  1. The devotional contrasts how we usually prepare for a trip — research, planning, backup supplies — with how the disciples went with Jesus without Matthew recording an itinerary or explanation. How much does needing a “plan” affect your own willingness to follow God into something new?
  2. Matthew does not record Peter, James, or John asking Jesus where they were going or what would happen there. What is a time you were asked to trust God without knowing the destination — and how did you respond?
  3. What tends to be the “unnecessary worry” that gets in the way of you trusting God’s call more simply?

Personal Reflection Questions

Take some quiet time with these:

  1. Pray this prayer: “All merciful God, clear our minds, our souls, our hearts of all unnecessary worries to be able to hear your call, trust you unconditionally, and follow you without fear or concern. Amen.” Sit with which phrase is hardest for you to mean right now.
  2. Name one small step God may be calling you toward this week where you don’t yet know the full plan — and take it anyway.

Closing Prayer

Good Shepherd, thank You for calling us to follow You one step at a time. Release us from the need to see the whole road before we begin. When worry crowds Your voice, quiet our hearts; when uncertainty makes us hesitate, steady our steps. Lead us onward in faith, trusting that wherever You take us, You are already there with grace. Amen.
