Fast of St. Gregory · Day 4 of 5
Foundations of Faith
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, cornerstone chosen and precious, build us into the spiritual house of Your Church. As St. Gregory laid the foundations of Etchmiadzin, the place where the Only Begotten descended in the vision given to him, lay Your foundation in us this day. Make us living stones, joined to one another in faith, fit for the holy temple You are raising, and teach us to offer our lives to God through You. Amen.
Scripture Reading
1 Peter 2:4–5 — “Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
Reflection
After the conversion of Tiridates and the baptism of the nation, Gregory did not rest. He built. Under his leadership, Etchmiadzin — whose very name means “the Only Begotten descended” — was raised as the sacred heart of the Armenian Church, founded, according to tradition, on the very spot Christ himself revealed to Gregory in a vision. The devotional draws on St. Peter’s image of believers as living stones: we are not spectators of the Church’s structure, but participants in it. Gregory’s legacy was not merely a building — it was a community, a way of life, a foundation of faith passed down through generations. The question it leaves with us is a searching one: what are we building with our lives, and what spiritual structure will remain after we are gone?
Group Discussion Questions
Gather with your group and discuss:
-
Etchmiadzin means “the Only Begotten descended” — heaven meeting earth in a specific place. Have you ever experienced a place — a church, a home, a landscape — where you felt that kind of meeting between heaven and earth? What was it like?
-
St. Peter calls us “living stones” being built into a spiritual house. In what ways do you see yourself as an active part of the Church’s structure — not just attending it, but contributing to it?
-
The devotional asks: “What are you building with your life? What spiritual structure will remain after you’re gone?” How would you honestly answer that right now?
Personal Reflection Questions
Take some quiet time with these:
-
Think of the people who laid a foundation of faith for you — a parent, a grandparent, a priest, a teacher. What is one gift from their legacy that you are still carrying? And who are you building that foundation for now?
-
Pray the prayer from the devotional: “Lord, help me to build what lasts. Let my life be a cathedral of your grace. May my children, my church, and my community stand on the foundation I leave behind. Amen.” What is one concrete thing you could do this week to build something that lasts?
Closing Prayer
Father, we thank You for the gift of the Church, for the saints who went before us, and for the faith handed down through generations. As St. Gregory built what lasted, grant us grace to build what lasts: lives of prayer, mercy, and faithfulness. Let those entrusted to us, our families, our parish, and our community stand on the foundation we are laying, stone by stone, in the love of Christ. Amen.
